The Relevance and Importance of the Ida B. Wells-Barnett Social Justice Weekend

The Ida B. Wells-Barnett Social Justice Weekend will provide participants with a powerful tool and networks for social change.  It will also provide a heightened motivation to work toward peaceful, more equitable and sustainable community at the local, state, regional, national and international levels.

Even though Ida B. Wells-Barnett was born in slavery, she never let that unjust societal disadvantage stop her from achieving national and international prominence on the world stage in the fields of journalism, civil rights, education, and community organizing.  Therefore, Ida B. Wells-Barnett’s renowned achievements not only reflect positively on our City of Holly Springs, MS, but equally as well on North Mississippi and the Mid-South, our state, our nation, and the world.

Mission

The Ida B. Wells-Barnett Social Justice Weekend specifically addresses the following social justice issues:

  • To develop a mindset of concern for our society’s inequity in wealth, education, and privilege
  • To promote the concept of cultural literacy and tolerance of diverse people and backgrounds in our city
  • To promote racial tolerance and other symbols of social justice in Holly Springs, Mississippi
  • To promote better race relations in our city
  • To fulfill the mission of Rust College as an institution of higher education in preparing students to be good citizens in their community, to be successful in life, and to be productive members of society

Goals and Objectives

  • To develop an annual fundraiser to establish an Ida B. Wells-Barnett Endowed Scholarship
  • Awareness Campaign/Promotions
  • Education – Educate participants and the general public about the life and times of Ida B. Wells-Barnett and the fact that she is a product of Rust College and Holly Springs, Mississippi
  • Donor Engagement and Acquisition.  Create a face-to-face experience to bond supports with Rust College and the Ida B. Wells-Barnett Museum
